Scale in the boiler and lines, a grind set too fine, or a brew unit that needs cleaning. These machines run at pressure through narrow passages, and mineral content in Bay Area and Sacramento water builds up faster than most owners expect. Descaling on schedule prevents the majority of what we are called for.
Burrs wear and oily beans clog the chute. A grinder that sounds like it is running dry usually is — the chute is blocked and beans are not reaching the burrs. Dark oily roasts cause this far more than lighter ones.
The brew group is a mechanical assembly with a motor and gear train, and it is the part most affected by skipped cleaning. Coffee oils gum the mechanism until the motor stalls. Many jams clear with a proper service; a stripped gear does not.
Drip tray sensors, the water tank seal, or internal tubing that has hardened with age. On plumbed installations add the supply connection and its filter housing, which are outside the machine and easy to overlook.
Blocked milk lines and a scaled or clogged air intake are the usual causes, and both come from skipping the daily rinse. Where the lines are clean the fault is typically the milk pump or a valve in the frothing circuit.
