Nearly every dryer complaint is airflow, heat, or moisture sensing — and airflow is by far the largest of the three.
Restricted airflow in almost every case. Lint accumulates in the duct run, not only the lint screen, and a long or crushed vent behind the machine strangles it. On heat-pump dryers the equivalent is a blocked condenser filter, which most owners do not know exists until we show them.
Vented electric dryers: heating element, thermal fuse, or the cycling thermostat. Gas dryers: igniter, flame sensor, or gas valve coils. Heat pump dryers do not have a heating element at all — no heat there means the compressor circuit or its controls, which is a different and more serious repair.
Moisture sensor bars inside the drum coated with fabric softener residue. They read the load as dry when it is not. Cleaning them with a little rubbing alcohol resolves it, and it is the cheapest fix in this trade.
Drum rollers, the idler pulley, or the rear bearing. All are serviceable and none are urgent, but a failed idler will eventually shred the belt and strand you mid-load.
Condenser and heat-pump models collect water and either pump it to a drain or hold it in a tank. A blocked condensate pump, a kinked drain line, or a full tank with a failed sensor puts that water where it does not belong.
The fuse did its job — something upstream restricted airflow. Replacing a blown thermal fuse without clearing the duct guarantees the same call in a month, so we do not do it that way.

Airflow measurement comes first. Static pressure and exhaust temperature together tell us whether the machine is starved before we look at any electrical component, and a large share of no-heat and long-cycle complaints resolve at that step without a part.
Heat-pump dryers deserve separate mention because they are still unfamiliar to many technicians. They run a sealed refrigerant circuit at low temperature, take longer by design, and require EPA 608 certification to service the sealed side. A shop that treats one like a vented dryer will replace parts that were never at fault.

Once a year for a typical household, more if the run is long or has multiple elbows. It is the single highest-value piece of dryer maintenance and it addresses both performance and fire risk.
By design, partly — they run cooler and gentler, which is why clothes last longer in them. But a cycle that has grown noticeably longer over time usually means the condenser filter or the heat exchanger needs cleaning, and both are owner-serviceable on most models.
Not immediately, but do not ignore it. Rollers and idler pulleys are inexpensive parts, and replacing them before the belt fails saves a second visit and an interrupted load.
Condenser and heat-pump models can, which is their main advantage, but they still need clearance for air circulation and the condensate has to go somewhere. Closets that are too tight cause the long-cycle complaint more often than any component.
