A built-in ice maker is a small refrigeration system with a water circuit bolted to it, and nearly every complaint traces to one of six patterns.
A unit that runs but produces nothing usually fails upstream of the freezing cycle. We check the water inlet valve solenoid, a clogged filter, a frozen fill tube, and the bin thermostat or optical level sensor that tells the machine the bin is already full. When those check out, the fault is in the harvest circuit or the sealed system.
Clear-ice machines build cubes in layers on an inverted evaporator. Scale on the evaporator plate, a weak circulation pump, or a low reservoir level all shorten the freeze cycle. Descaling fixes some of it; a pump or float that no longer holds level does not.
Almost always airflow or heat rejection. Undercounter units pull air through a front grille that fills with dust and pet hair, and the condenser behind it packs solid within a year in most kitchens. Beyond that: a stuck hot-gas harvest valve, or a sealed system losing charge.
These units either gravity-drain or use a small drain pump, and both clog with the slime that forms in any standing water line. We also see split fill tubing, failed drain pump check valves, and door gaskets that no longer seal so the cabinet sweats.
Nugget and chewable-ice units drive an auger through a gearmotor. Bearing wear and gearmotor failure dominate, and they announce themselves as grinding or a machine that hums without moving ice.
Ice absorbs odors, so the cause is usually the reservoir, the bin, or a filter well past its interval rather than the water supply. Where a plastic taste persists after a full sanitize and filter change, the fill tubing itself is the source.

We start with the water circuit and the harvest cycle, because that is where most failures live and because those parts are diagnosable without opening the sealed system. Inlet pressure, fill volume, reservoir level, evaporator condition, harvest valve operation, bin sensor response — a full cycle observation tells us more than any error code.
Sealed-system faults are the smaller share, and we treat them differently. Low charge, a restriction, or a failed compressor on a unit under warranty goes through the manufacturer; on an older unit we quote the repair against the cost of replacement and let you decide with real numbers.
Parts come from manufacturer channels, not aftermarket equivalents. On authorized brands that also means we work from current factory service bulletins, which matters more than it sounds — several common undercounter failures have superseded part numbers that fix the underlying design issue rather than repeating it.
Usually yes. A premium undercounter unit runs $2,500 to $6,000 to replace, and most failures are a valve, pump, sensor, or gearmotor rather than the sealed system. The honest exception is a compressor or evaporator failure on a unit past ten years — at that point replacement is the better spend, and we will tell you so on the first visit.

Once a year for a descale, sanitize, filter change, and condenser cleaning. In hard-water areas of Sacramento County and the East Bay, scale builds fast enough that skipping two years running is the most common reason a machine we see has stopped making ice.
Heat rejection. A condenser that is marginal at 68°F ambient cannot keep up at 85°F in a closed kitchen, so the freeze cycle never completes. It reads as a seasonal fault but it is a dirty condenser or a low charge.
