What We Diagnose

Wine storage fails in ways that matter more than a regular refrigerator, because the damage to the contents is silent and cumulative.

Temperature drifting or swinging

The most damaging fault and the least visible. Wine tolerates a steady 55°F far better than a cabinet that cycles between 48 and 62. Causes run from a drifting thermistor to a door seal that no longer closes fully to a control that has lost calibration — and none of them announce themselves until you taste the result.

Not cooling at all

On compressor units the diagnosis follows the same path as any refrigeration: condenser condition, fan operation, control probe readings, then the sealed system. On thermoelectric units there is no compressor — a Peltier module or its fan has failed, and those are a different and usually cheaper repair.

One zone works, the other does not

Dual-zone cabinets use either a damper splitting one evaporator or two independent circuits. Which design you have determines whether a dead zone means a damper motor, a fan, or a second sealed system. We identify the architecture before quoting.

Condensation or humidity problems

Wine needs humidity that a standard refrigerator is designed to remove. Cabinets running too dry shrink corks; cabinets running wet grow mould on labels. Both usually trace to door seals, a blocked drain, or a unit installed where ambient conditions defeat it.

Vibration or excessive noise

Sustained vibration disturbs sediment and accelerates ageing. Compressor isolators, a condenser fan out of balance, and units wedged tight into cabinetry without clearance are the usual sources — and the last of those is an installation fault rather than a failure.

Cellar system short-cycling

Ducted and split cellar systems fail differently from cabinets. Short cycling points at an oversized unit, a thermostat placed badly within the room, or a refrigerant charge issue, and the fix is frequently not a part at all.

A wine cabinet that is slightly wrong costs more than one that is clearly broken. A cellar holding 60°F instead of 55°F will not alarm and will not look faulty, but it ages a collection at roughly twice the intended rate. If you are unsure, measure with an independent thermometer before assuming all is well.

How the Repair Works

We log cabinet temperature over a full cycle rather than reading the display, because the display shows setpoint and the wine experiences actual. Swing amplitude and cycle length together tell us whether we are looking at a sensor, a seal, a control, or a charge problem.

Sealed-system work requires EPA Section 608 certification under federal law, and wine units are small-charge systems where a leak that would be trivial in a refrigerator disables the cabinet entirely. Finding the leak matters more than the recharge.

Installation is a genuine cause here rather than an excuse. Undercounter wine cabinets reject heat through a front grille and need clearance that cabinetry frequently does not provide. A unit that has never held temperature since the day it went in is usually an installation problem, and we will say so rather than replacing parts.

Common Questions

What temperature should a wine cooler hold?

Around 55°F for long-term storage of both reds and whites, with serving-temperature zones set separately if the cabinet is dual-zone. Stability matters more than the exact number — a steady 58 is better for the wine than a 55 that swings.

Is a thermoelectric wine cooler worth repairing?

Often not. They are inexpensive units and the Peltier module plus fan can approach replacement cost. Compressor-based cabinets from the brands we list are a different case entirely and are usually well worth repairing.

My wine cooler is noisy. Is that harming the wine?

Sustained vibration does affect wine over time by keeping sediment in suspension and accelerating chemical reactions. Occasional compressor noise is normal; a cabinet that buzzes constantly or that you can feel through the cabinetry is worth addressing.

Can you work on a walk-in wine cellar?

Yes, on residential cellar cooling systems including ducted and split units. Commercial cellar installations are outside what we take on.

Why is there frost inside my wine cabinet?

Usually a door seal that no longer closes, letting humid room air in where it condenses and freezes on the evaporator. Less often a defrost fault. Either way the fix is straightforward and worth doing promptly, since a frosted evaporator stops cooling properly.
