Wine storage fails in ways that matter more than a regular refrigerator, because the damage to the contents is silent and cumulative.
The most damaging fault and the least visible. Wine tolerates a steady 55°F far better than a cabinet that cycles between 48 and 62. Causes run from a drifting thermistor to a door seal that no longer closes fully to a control that has lost calibration — and none of them announce themselves until you taste the result.
On compressor units the diagnosis follows the same path as any refrigeration: condenser condition, fan operation, control probe readings, then the sealed system. On thermoelectric units there is no compressor — a Peltier module or its fan has failed, and those are a different and usually cheaper repair.
Dual-zone cabinets use either a damper splitting one evaporator or two independent circuits. Which design you have determines whether a dead zone means a damper motor, a fan, or a second sealed system. We identify the architecture before quoting.
Wine needs humidity that a standard refrigerator is designed to remove. Cabinets running too dry shrink corks; cabinets running wet grow mould on labels. Both usually trace to door seals, a blocked drain, or a unit installed where ambient conditions defeat it.
Sustained vibration disturbs sediment and accelerates ageing. Compressor isolators, a condenser fan out of balance, and units wedged tight into cabinetry without clearance are the usual sources — and the last of those is an installation fault rather than a failure.
Ducted and split cellar systems fail differently from cabinets. Short cycling points at an oversized unit, a thermostat placed badly within the room, or a refrigerant charge issue, and the fix is frequently not a part at all.

We log cabinet temperature over a full cycle rather than reading the display, because the display shows setpoint and the wine experiences actual. Swing amplitude and cycle length together tell us whether we are looking at a sensor, a seal, a control, or a charge problem.
Sealed-system work requires EPA Section 608 certification under federal law, and wine units are small-charge systems where a leak that would be trivial in a refrigerator disables the cabinet entirely. Finding the leak matters more than the recharge.
Installation is a genuine cause here rather than an excuse. Undercounter wine cabinets reject heat through a front grille and need clearance that cabinetry frequently does not provide. A unit that has never held temperature since the day it went in is usually an installation problem, and we will say so rather than replacing parts.
