A freezer that fails quietly costs more than one that fails loudly, because the contents go before anyone notices. These are the patterns and what each one actually means.
Airflow before refrigerant in nearly every case. The evaporator fan has stopped, or the evaporator itself is iced over from a defrost failure and no air is moving through it. Both present identically and both are far cheaper than a sealed-system repair.
Defrost circuit — heater, terminator, or the control that schedules the cycle. Heavy frost on food packaging specifically usually means warm humid air entering, which points at a door seal or a door left ajar rather than a component.
Condenser first. Built-in freezers reject heat through a front grille that packs with dust within a year in most kitchens. Then the condenser fan, door gaskets, and control probe readings, and only after all of those the sealed system.
A freezer that cycles between 0 and 15°F damages contents through repeated partial thaw even though it never reads warm. Causes run from a drifting thermistor to a control that has lost calibration, and neither announces itself.
The defrost drain has frozen or clogged. Water backs up, spills over, and freezes wherever it lands. Clearing it is straightforward; it recurs unless the trap or the drain heater is corrected.
Inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, water filter, or the bin level sensor. On a freezer that is otherwise holding temperature, the sealed system is not the problem.

We measure rather than guess: cabinet and evaporator temperature, defrost cycle behaviour, condenser temperature rise, and the control's own sensor readings. Together those four separate airflow from defrost from controls from the sealed system, which are four repairs with very different costs and very different arithmetic on an older cabinet.
Sealed-system work requires EPA Section 608 certification under federal law. On a built-in column under about twelve years old that repair is usually worth doing, because the cabinet is the expensive part and it is still sound. Past that we put the repair and the replacement numbers side by side rather than deciding for you.
Integrated and column freezers also carry an installation dimension. Doors that drag, panels out of alignment, and units that ice up only in summer are frequently install faults rather than component failures, and we correct those rather than replacing parts that were never broken.

On dual-evaporator cabinets it means the fresh-food side specifically — its evaporator fan, defrost, or that independent circuit. It usually rules out the compressor entirely, which is good news.
Roughly 48 hours in a full freezer with the door kept shut, half that if it is only partly full. Keep it closed and call — opening to check costs you hours of that margin.
A light film is. Heavy frost on the walls means a defrost fault; heavy frost on packaging means warm humid air entering, usually a seal or a door not closing. Neither is normal on a modern frost-free unit.
Yes. Units in unconditioned spaces have their own failure pattern — most are not rated for the ambient swings a garage sees in this region, and that shows up as summer cooling complaints.
